Goethe vs telc vs TestDaF vs ÖSD: What Is the Difference?

All four can prove German ability, but they are not interchangeable for every purpose. The right exam depends on your required level, university, employer, recognition authority or visa pathway.

Students often ask, “Which German certificate is best?” A more useful question is: Which certificate does my destination actually accept for my purpose? Goethe, telc and ÖSD offer CEFR-based examinations across multiple levels, while TestDaF is designed particularly around the German needed for higher education.

1

Goethe: broad CEFR exam range

Goethe-Institut offers examinations from A1 for beginners to C2. The certificates are internationally recognised and are used as language evidence in contexts such as visa procedures, professional recognition and higher education, depending on the level and receiving institution.

For example, Goethe A1 Start Deutsch 1 is an adult beginner examination. At the other end, Goethe states that its C2 certificate is recognised by all German universities for study or research; many universities also accept certain lower Goethe certificates, but applicants must check the specific university.

2

telc: general plus specialised exams

telc's German portfolio is broad. Alongside general examinations such as telc Deutsch B2 and C1, it includes variants for work, nursing, medicine and higher education.

A particularly important example for university applicants is telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, an examination specifically designed for university access and academic language skills.

Do not write only “I need telc”. Ask which exact certificate is required — for example telc Deutsch B1, B2, C1 Hochschule or a specialised professional examination.
3

TestDaF: built around university study

TestDaF is different from a normal A1-to-C2 exam series. It tests language relevant to studying at a German university and reports separate results for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking as TDN 3, TDN 4 or TDN 5.

The official TestDaF information places these levels within the B2–C1 range. Under the current higher-education framework, achieving at least TDN 4 in all four examination parts counts as proof of linguistic ability for unrestricted admission/enrolment across German degree programmes. Universities may set differentiated rules in some programmes, so applicants should still check the target university.

4

ÖSD: Austrian exam system with international use

ÖSD — Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch — offers CEFR-based examinations from A1 through C2. Its examination system includes standard certificates as well as selected versions such as B2 for nursing/medical professions and C2 business German.

ÖSD also emphasises the pluricentric nature of German, recognising standard varieties used across German-speaking countries. For immigration, professional recognition or study, always confirm whether the exact ÖSD certificate and level satisfy the receiving authority's requirement.

5

Which one for a German university?

If your purpose is a German-taught university programme, the university's admission page should decide your exam choice. TestDaF is specifically designed for higher-education admission and is recognised by all German universities. telc C1 Hochschule is explicitly designed for university access. Goethe certificates can also be accepted at university level depending on the certificate and institution.

Do this before booking: Open your exact university + exact programme language-requirement page. Note the accepted certificate, minimum result and whether each module needs a specific score.
6

Which one for Ausbildung?

For Ausbildung, the central issue is normally the required CEFR level and accepted proof, not simply choosing the most famous exam brand. Current German vocational-training guidance commonly points to B1 as the key language benchmark for visa purposes in applicable cases, while employers or professions can ask for stronger German.

Before booking Goethe, telc or ÖSD, check the exact current requirement for your employer and visa route.

7

Which one for nursing or healthcare?

Healthcare is a regulated area, so language evidence can be tied to professional recognition and state-level requirements. A general B2 certificate and a profession-specific language exam are not automatically the same thing.

telc offers nursing and medical examination formats, ÖSD lists a B2 nursing/medical-professions examination, and Goethe also has profession-oriented testing products. The correct choice depends on what the competent recognition authority accepts for your profession and German federal state.

8

Is one exam easier than the others?

There is no reliable universal answer. Two exams at the same CEFR level can differ in task design, timing, modular structure and speaking format. A student may personally prefer one format, but that does not make it objectively easier for everyone.

First choose an exam that is accepted for your purpose. Then download the provider's official model test and practise that exact format.

9

Can you choose only by exam availability?

Availability matters, especially if exam dates are limited, but acceptance comes first. A quickly available certificate is not useful if your university or authority does not accept that exact examination or result.

Also check whether the exam is offered as paper-based, digital or hybrid, whether modules can be taken separately, how results are reported and how long results may take.

10

A simple decision process

Your goalWhat to verify first
Spouse/family visaRequired CEFR level and accepted certificates on the current official visa page
AusbildungEmployer + vocational-training visa language requirement
German universityExact programme's accepted university-language certificates and minimum scores
Nursing/regulated professionCompetent recognition authority and state-specific language evidence
EmploymentEmployer/authority requirement for the specific occupation

Best rule before paying an exam fee

Do not ask “Which certificate is famous?” Ask “Which exact certificate and result does my receiving institution accept?” Requirements can differ by visa route, university, profession and authority.

Yes. Their German examinations are aligned with CEFR levels. Goethe and ÖSD offer exam ranges from A1 to C2, while telc has general and specialised examinations across CEFR levels.

Is TestDaF the same as a normal C1 exam?

Which TestDaF score is normally needed for German university admission?

TDN 4 in all four examination parts is generally accepted as proof of linguistic study ability for unrestricted university admission/enrolment. Individual programmes can have differentiated requirements.
