Part-Time Jobs for Students in Germany

Indian and other international students can work during their studies when their residence title permits it. A job can provide experience and additional income, but it should not be treated as guaranteed funding for study or living costs.

Current Work Rules for International Students

  • Third-country students may work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year without Federal Employment Agency approval
  • A working day of up to four hours counts as a half day; more than four hours counts as a full day
  • Alternatively, students may work up to 20 hours per week during the lecture period; different conditions can apply during semester breaks
  • Student or academic assistant work can have special counting rules, so confirm the treatment with the university and foreigners authority
  • Work beyond the permitted limit needs approval; self-employment or freelance work requires permission from the local foreigners authority

2026 Pay & Minijob Reference

Germany’s statutory minimum wage is €13.90 gross per hour from 1 January 2026, subject to legal exceptions. The 2026 earnings limit for an earnings-based Minijob is €603 per month. Gross pay is not the same as take-home pay, and Minijob status does not increase immigration work limits.

Where to Find Student Jobs

💡
German Language Advantage

English may be enough for some university, IT or international-company roles, but practical German can open more customer-facing and local opportunities. An A2–B1 foundation can help; the employer decides the language level for each vacancy.

⚠️
Your Residence Permit Controls

Check the employment wording on your residence title, keep a record of hours and working days, and ask the local foreigners authority before exceeding a limit or accepting freelance work. Tax and social-insurance treatment depends on the job, earnings, hours and student status.
