Studienkolleg – Foundation Year in Germany

If you completed only 12 years of schooling (as in India), you may need to attend a Studienkolleg before joining a German university.

What is Studienkolleg?

Studienkolleg is a one-year preparatory program in Germany designed for international students whose school education does not directly qualify them for university admission. Since India follows a 10+2 education system (12 years), most Indian students must either complete two semesters at an Indian university or attend a Studienkolleg in Germany before starting a Bachelor degree.

The program usually lasts two semesters (1 academic year) and ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) – a qualifying examination that allows students to apply for Bachelor programs at German universities.

🎯
Who Must Attend Studienkolleg?

Indian students who have completed only 12th standard and have not studied at an Indian university usually need to attend Studienkolleg before applying for Bachelor programs in Germany.

Feststellungsprüfung (FSP Exam)

The Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) is the final examination of the Studienkolleg. Students must pass this exam to become eligible for university admission in Germany. The exam tests subject knowledge related to your chosen course track.

Students usually get two attempts to pass the FSP exam at most Studienkollegs.

German vs English Studienkolleg

German Studienkolleg: Most public Studienkollegs in Germany teach in German and require B1–B2 German proficiency. Students usually need to pass an entrance exam called the Aufnahmeprüfung, which tests German language skills and basic subject knowledge (such as Mathematics for T-Kurs).

After completing Studienkolleg, students must pass the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP). This exam allows them to apply to Bachelor programs at German universities. Most public universities accept the FSP certificate from state Studienkollegs.

Students who plan to study through this pathway usually begin their German preparation in India. Berlin German Academy in Surat provides structured German language training from A1 to B2 level specifically designed for students planning to study in Germany.

English Studienkolleg: English-medium preparatory programs are mostly offered by private institutions. These programs require an English proficiency test such as IELTS (5.5–6.0) or equivalent.

Tuition fees for private English Studienkollegs usually range between €3,000 and €8,000 per year. These programs are suitable for students who plan to apply to English-taught Bachelor programs in Germany.

However, students should know that English Bachelor programs in Germany are limited. Even when studying in English, learning basic German (A2–B1) is highly recommended for daily life, part-time jobs, and long-term career opportunities in Germany.

Students who want to prepare for Germany can join German language classes and Germany study guidance at Berlin German Academy in Surat, where we provide German training, APS guidance, Studienkolleg preparation, and university application support.
