13th Year Pathway – Study in India First

Complete one successful academic year inside a regular recognised Indian Bachelor’s program and, when the current conditions are met, apply for direct subject-restricted admission in Germany.

What is the 13th Year Pathway?

“13th Year” is a convenient name for the prior university study route. It does not mean that any extra course or gap year will qualify. For admissions from Winter Semester 2026/27 onward, APS India states that an applicant with at least 70% overall in Class XII may qualify after completing one successful academic year in a regular Bachelor’s program at a recognised higher education institution in India.

The resulting university entrance qualification is subject-restricted. The intended German Bachelor’s program must be in the applicant’s previous academic field or a closely related subject. APS verifies documents and academic eligibility; the German university makes the final admission decision.

A qualifying year of university study may allow direct subject-restricted application without Studienkolleg. It does not create unrestricted admission, and an offer is never automatic.

Eligibility Requirements

  • At least 70% of the maximum overall marks in Class XII for admissions from Winter Semester 2026/27 onward
  • Enrolment in a regular Bachelor’s program at a recognised higher education institution in India
  • One successful academic year, normally documented through at least two completed semesters and their results
  • The intended German degree must remain in the previous field or a closely related subject
  • APS application under the applicable undergraduate checklist after completing the academic stage used for this pathway, unless an official exemption applies
  • The exact German or English language proof required by the chosen university and the applicable visa checklist

Subject-Restricted Program Choice

This pathway does not allow a free switch into any Bachelor’s degree. Shortlist only programs that continue the field studied during the successful academic year in India, then request the university’s formal evaluation.

  • Engineering: continue into the same or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Computer Science or IT: target related computing, software or information-technology programs
  • Business or Economics: choose degrees with a compatible academic foundation
  • Natural Sciences: remain within an academically connected science subject
  • Humanities or Social Sciences: confirm that the prior modules match the intended field
  • Architecture or Design: check subject continuity plus any portfolio, aptitude-test or internship requirement
  • Language of instruction: meet the separate certificate and score required for that exact program
  • Final decision: admission eligibility and acceptance remain with the German university
