Germany Student Visa from India

A clear route for degree studies, Studienkolleg and study-preparatory language courses—from APS and admission through the Consular Services Portal, appointment and registration after arrival.

⚠️
Do Not Book a Separate VFS Appointment First

Study-purpose applications available through the Consular Services Portal must be submitted there. Complete the online application and document pre-check first; the appointment link is issued at the end of that process. A standalone appointment without the completed CSP pre-check will not be accepted for a CSP application.

🛂 National Visa

Study in Germany for more than 90 days normally requires a long-stay national or D visa—not a Schengen visitor visa.

💻 CSP Application

The portal questionnaire assigns the correct study subtype. Answer every question according to your real situation.

📍 Mumbai Jurisdiction

Gujarat residents fall under the German Consulate General Mumbai. Select the mission responsible for where you live.

💶 €75 Adult Fee

The current India page lists ₹8,400 / €75 for adults, plus the external service-provider fee. Exchange-rate updates can change INR.

Choose the Correct Visa Purpose

The student category has subtypes. Choosing one that does not match your admission or purpose can require you to delete the process and begin again.

STUDY VISA

Direct Bachelor’s or Master’s Studies

Use the study route when you hold admission to a full-time, in-person degree program. Upload the admission letter, APS or accepted exemption proof, academic records, study-language proof, finances, insurance, motivation letter and CV.

PREPARATORY STUDIES

Studienkolleg or Study-Preparatory Language Course

This route covers a recognised preparatory college or language course connected to intended higher education. The admission or registration document must clearly support the preparation route.

SEEKING A PLACE

Seeking a University Place

A separate subtype exists for eligible applicants who are seeking admission or a preparatory place. Its finance and evidence requirements differ, so use the portal questionnaire instead of selecting a standard student route by assumption.

DIFFERENT ROUTE

Standalone Intensive German Course

An intensive German course unrelated to future studies or vocational training is not the study-visa subtype. The current India guidance lists it under non-CSP paper applications. Follow that specific official checklist and VFS route.

The Correct Application Sequence

This order reflects the current German Missions in India workflow. The portal may request corrections or additional evidence for your individual file.

1

Admission and APS

Secure the admission or preparatory confirmation and complete the correct APS procedure unless an official exemption applies.

2

Select Your Mission

Choose India as country of residence and the mission responsible for your residential state. Gujarat belongs to Mumbai.

3

Complete CSP Questions

Choose study purposes and answer the subtype questionnaire truthfully. A wrong subtype cannot simply be edited later.

4

Upload Documents

Upload clear, complete files in the requested sections. Save your progress and use portal instructions for each upload.

5

Finish Pre-Check

Wait for review, correct anything requested and complete pre-check. Do not treat an incomplete upload as an application.

6

Book Issued Appointment

Use the link given after pre-check. Attend the instructed location with passport, requested originals and appointment papers.

7

Biometrics and Decision

Provide biometrics, pay applicable charges and answer questions if asked. Processing continues with the responsible mission.

📑
Current APS Exemptions Listed by the German Missions

The study-visa page lists exemptions for PhD/PostDoc study, a stipend from German or EU public funds, a non-German degree in Germany, a foreign qualification that is not Indian, or an international school-leaving certificate/degree such as the International Baccalaureate. Confirm the exemption against both APS India and your live CSP checklist.

Proof of Funds for Study

For the regular study route, the current 2026 official amount is €11,904 for the first year with a monthly withdrawal limit of €992. Recheck the live checklist immediately before transferring funds.

Blocked Account

Provide a German blocked-account confirmation showing the required total and monthly withdrawal restriction. Compare private providers yourself; the Federal Foreign Office does not recommend one.

Formal Commitment

A sponsor living in Germany may make a formal Declaration of Commitment at the competent German immigration office and provide the required original evidence.

Public Scholarship

Accepted evidence can include a scholarship or stipend funded by German or EU public funds. The award document must clearly show the financial support.

Education Loan

Upload official loan evidence when it forms part of your financing. Follow the portal if it requests additional proof rather than assuming a sanction letter alone is sufficient.

Study-Language Proof Used for the Visa

University admission and visa proof are connected but not identical checks. Upload the recognised certificate requested for your real course language and visa subtype.
